Tiered storage architecture takes the process further, making a design within the systems of rooms that is set aside for different types of storage. The architectural design decides which rooms cater to which files being stored.
Once the architecture has been laid out, the automation process can begin, and data can be stored according to set parameters. There are three types of storage involved in tiered storage architecture, each one with its own characteristics to suit particular needs. Once you learn the parameters, you can determine which storage function needs to be used in your system as well as where.
Direct attached storage (DAS) is the most basic storage subsystem. This storage pertains to different types of drives such as SCSI, SATA, flash and optical drives. When working on your computer you probably save your files to your hard drive or an external hard drive. You might use rewritable CD disks or one of the memory cards available. You probably base your decision on where you store your information as to its importance in daily function. Working within a tiered storage framework will have the same results.
